Measuring TPACK – Two Surveys available

3 March 2009 13 Comments

This week, two advances have been made in the developing TPACK theory. Researchers have been seeking ways to reliably assess the components of TPACK, track changes over time, and find ways to compare professional development approaches on TPACK outcomes. Now, researchers have two choices for published, reliable surveys to use.

The first is by Archambault, L., & Crippen, K. (2009), recently published in the CITE Journal. It examined “a national sample of 596 K-12 online teachers and measures their knowledge with respect to three key domains as described by the TPACK framework: technology, pedagogy, content.” The two central publications are as follows:

Archambault, L. (2009, March). Putting the T in PCK: Exploring the nature of the TPACK framework among K-12 online educators using a web-based survey. Paper presented at the 2009 International Conference of the Society for the Information and Technology & Teacher Education. March 2-6, Charleston, South Carolina.

Archambault, L., & Crippen, K. (2009). Examining TPACK among K-12 online distance educators in the United States. Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 9(1). Retrieved from http://www.citejournal.org/vol9/iss1/general/article2.cfm

The second survey was developed as a result between Iowa State and Michigan State University. The survey and guide to its use is available here. Its use and characteristics are further described in the following articles (if you need a PW to get an article just email me).

Schmidt, D., Baran, E., Thompson, A., Koehler, M.J., Shin, T, & Mishra, P. (2009, April). Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK): The Development and Validation of an Assessment Instrument for Preservice Teachers. Paper presented at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association. April 13-17, San Diego, California.

Schmidt, D., Baran, E., Thompson, A., Koehler, M.J., Mishra, P., & Shin, T. (2009, March). Examining preservice teachers’ development of technological pedagogical content knowledge in an introductory instructional technology course. Paper presented at the 2009 International Conference of the Society for the Information and Technology & Teacher Education. March 2-6, Charleston, South Carolina.

Shin, T., Koehler, M.J., Mishra, P. Schmidt, D., Baran, E., & Thompson, A. (2009, March). Changing technological pedagogical content knowledge (tpack) through course experiences Paper presented at the 2009 International Conference of the Society for the Information and Technology & Teacher Education. I am currently working on my Masters in ICT supported learning here in Oslo, Norway and what I would like to do is to explore variations in teachers perceived knowledge of/in the the three componentes and their relations. I am looking for variations based on teaching experience, formal teacher education, subjects taught etc. Do you know of any similar studies?
    Best regards,
    Harald

I’m not aware of specific studies. Although I know that Denice Schmidt at Iowa State has given the TPACK survey to a number of populations. Check out her work, to look for these types of differences: http://www.ci.hs.iastate.edu/profiles/dschmidt.php

    Hello,

I am considering a research study using TPACK as a framework to undertand how higher education instructors integrate technology in the classroom. The surveys noted here focus on K-12 and the student perspective. Are you aware of a survey instrument or qualitative study from the perspective of higher education intructors? I really like the TPACK framework.

    Dear Doc

I am in a similar position as Karen Skibba. I am currently doing a Masters at Wits University, South Africa and am employed in an open distance university, Unisa. I have read extensively on the TPCK framework and various survey instruments attempting to measure and track TPCK. However it would appear all TPCK research is focussed around pre-service teachers and in school settings. I have not been successful in locating research work done within higher education context. I managed to chat with Markus Mostert from the Rhodes University, South Africa who emailed me his paper “Using ICTs in Teaching and Learning: Reflections on Professional Development of Academic Staff”. I am looking for a little more than just reflections. Any links to sources that speaks to higher education context, particularly TPCK survey instruments used. Your assistance in this regards will be highly appreciated as I have to submit my proposal October 31 2012.

    Thanking you

    Michelle

Like Karen, I am also considering using TPACK as a framework to look at faculty use of digital content in higher education. I have been looking for studies and an instrument used in such a context. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks,
