Short Biography

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1999, with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, with an emphasis in Cognitive Psychology applied to Education. I have prior degrees in Computer Science (M.S. and B.S.) and Mathematics (B.S.). All of this has led me to the study of educational technology, where my interests have led me, broadly speaking, to seek to understand the pedagogical affordances of newer technologies for learning.

Research Interests

My research and teaching focus on understanding the affordances and constraints of new technologies; the design of technology-rich, innovative learning environments; and the professional development of teachers. By examining the learning afforded by recent technologies, including video and hypermedia, I have focused on how these technologies might be well-suited to help learners (especially teachers) acquire new knowledge, skills, or understanding in complex and ill-structured domains. I have also examined the connection between technology and pedagogy as a question of research into practice: how can we help teachers make connections between technology and effective pedagogical uses? This has led to a program of research about a form of knowledge, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK), that has developed theoretical, pedagogical, and methodological perspectives that characterize teachers who effectively integrate content, pedagogy, and technology in their classroom practice.
